Aberdeen sign language DVD takes off
A lecturer at The Robert Gordon University (RGU) has developed a DVD designed to help the parents of Deaf children communicate with them in the Aberdeen regional dialect of British Sign Language (BSL). The idea for the project came from Kathleen Cameron, a member of the Aberdeen Deaf Community who is a member of a project management committee made up from representatives of all the local Deaf groups. Having received money from Aberdeen City Council, they approached Laura Muir, who lectures in Information Management at the University's Aberdeen Business School, to produce the DVD.Laura said, "Contrary to the opinion that BSL is a universal language, there is actually a great deal of regional variation of signs, even across Scotland. "Members of the Deaf Club in Aberdeen wanted to produce a video which could be used by the hearing parents of young Deaf children, to enable them to communicate in the Aberdeen regional variation of BSL."
