Phonak Parent Infant Programme breaks down barriers
Brazil has become the first international destination to take on board the Phonak Parent Infant Programme (PIP), an initiative aiming to promote and develop more widespread and better prosthetic solutions for children affected by hearing impairment. With this aim, the programme publicises common infant hearing impairment treatment norms and steps created in Spain so that they can be applied in different countries. The programme processes treatment protocols developed in each country according to these Spanish ideas and methodologies. The campaign is destined to develop the initiative in another 9 countries in 2010, all under the management of Juan Carlos Calvo and Mariana Maggio. To this end, Argentina, Ecuador, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Greece, Israel, South Korea, and South Africa made initial contacts with PIP leaders in Spain during the last three months of 2009 in order to learn the characteristics of the project and evaluate its application in their own respective territories. The project, which began almost 8 years ago, consists of promoting projects on a non-profit basis between specialist professionals, parents, public bodies, and the varied related associations in interested countries. The aim is to help set up a structure of integrated services to assure greater technical and professional effectiveness in treating children with hearing problems. In this respect, the programme gets technological solutions across to other specialists in order to break down social communication barriers. It also creates awareness of new technical solutions available for prosthetic correction and technical support for Modulated Frequency (FM) equipment set up in classrooms.
